The Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) is offering 2022 Request for Proposals to fund expert teams to deliver rapid solutions to the most critical challenges facing humans and the planet.
SNAPP, a first-of-its-kind scientific joint venture between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), is a tool for developing sustainable solutions to global conservation challenges. Since inception, SNAPP, through its working groups, has provided science and user-friendly tools backed by hard data to identify and quantify nature’s role and value in preventing and solving some of the most complex challenges the world faces around food and water security, climate change, and energy.

Funding Information
For each funding cycle, depending on available funding, SNAPP provides up to US$1 million in funds to 4-6 working groups.
Benefits
SNAPP program staff will provide various supports throughout the project, including:
- Working group and project management advice, as appropriate, informed by SNAPP staff’s experience with successful working groups
- Contract negotiation and payment of identified meeting venues, hotels, catering and facilitation services, as well as reimbursement of individual travelers
- Contract management and contract development support as appropriate
Funding Restriction
Funding restrictions are as follows:
- Under no circumstances may SNAPP funds be used to pay salaries of Principal Investigators, nor can these funds be used to pay for routine working group meeting attendance by PIs.
- No overheads may be charged to SNAPP funds.
- Funds may be used to pay for analysis conducted by an outside contractor, or even a specific analysis conducted by a working group member (who is not a PI) where it is above and beyond the engagement of most working group members and not otherwise part of this person’s job. Funds may also cover postdoctoral researchers, research assistants, facilitators, graphic designers, and other independent contractors on a case-by-case basis.
- The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is the fiscal agent for SNAPP and will execute all contracts unless otherwise approved in advance and in writing; therefore, standard TN constraints on conflicts of interest apply.
Eligibility Criteria
- Researchers and practitioners of any nationality affiliated with an academic, governmental agency, multilateral, or nonprofit institution may submit a proposal. Individuals operating independently are also eligible to apply. Individuals from private sector institutions are fully eligible to be participants of a working group but are not eligible to lead SNAPP working groups as Principal Investigators (PIs, or team leads).
- Individuals and organizations from the humanitarian and development sectors are encouraged to submit SNAPP proposals. While many SNAPP working groups choose to fund a postdoctoral researcher, SNAPP funds cannot fund the salaries of the Principal Investigator(s), and the proposal should therefore not be written and submitted by a postdoc seeking to fund their ongoing work.
